Drawing inspiration
I drew inspiration for my comic from both Fun Home by Alison Bechdel and Vietnamerica by GB Tran. I used Bechdel’s technique of having a character say one thing while really thinking another when my younger self was talking to my great-uncle. Also, I used different speech bubbles in order to convey different emotions that one may express. Further, I use different fonts in order to convey different tones of voice. Both of these ideas are borrowed from Tran and used when I’m talking to the girl. Also, I take Tran's idea of changing font to the extreme, scrawling complete gibberish in place of where characters are speaking Korean. This is to put the reader, whether or not he or she speaks Korean, in my shoes regarding how confused and lost I felt when others around me were speaking the language.
As for the overarching idea for the comic, I was inspired by both books, in which the characters must deal with their own unique problems, to think about my own issues, especially ones I had when growing up. The first idea that came to mind was my struggle with the Korean language. From there, I was able to form ideas that revolve around it, such as the idea that this comic is actually my doodling on Korean alphabet practice worksheets.
